Maternity Centers: The Casas Maternas Model

Safe Births, Close to Home

A Casa Materna Rural is a community-built and community-run maternity center where families receive care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early years of a child's life. Each Casa is staffed by local, indigenous health professionals who provide respectful, culturally appropriate care in the patient's language.

Casas Maternas are made possible through the collaboration of communities, international allies, and government partners—who help with construction, training, and ongoing support. These centers offer 24/7 maternal and newborn care, combined with outreach in the surrounding villages to promote safe motherhood.

The first Casa Materna opened in 2009 in Calhuitz, San Sebastián Coatán. Since then, we've opened six more and inspired similar clinics across Guatemala. Today, we operate four Casas Maternas in the Huehuetenango Department.

Scroll down to learn more about each Casa Materna and the impact they're having in their communities.

"The care provided at our maternity clinic is different than other clinics. The women trust the staff. We find that they tell their friends about the care they receive, and so now many more women have been coming to our center to deliver."
